Friday, September 4, 2026 – A bit of border flare

Each day through Ukrainian Heritage Month, we’ll share some easy-to-do ideas that you can try on your postcards to Defenders. Along the way, we’ll share other ideas for you to learn more about Ukrainian culture and heritage.

I’ve set a goal of writing 30 distinct postcards to Defenders on which I will try some art. 30 days. 30 cards. Simple art. You’ll notice a tendency toward a blue/yellow theme. Because … you know … the Ukrainian flag!

Postcard challenge – Intro to Blob Art

First a confession.

I am traveling; ergo, I’m writing cards to Defenders from various locations. We were on land in Iceland for a week, then hopped onto a cruise ship.

On our ship there are all sorts of activities, including a variety of art classes. Perfect! Just what I need for my 30-day challenge of art on postcards for Defenders!

I take some postcards to art class, then squeeze in my own little postcard activity between instructions. I’m that student at the back of the room who doodles while the teacher gives a lesson, then might ask, “what are we supposed to do?”. 😉 

Today’s card is my first attempt using water colour blobs to start the process of decorating my postcards to Defenders. You’ll see more of these kinds of ‘blob art’ in the coming days.

1. I took a few cards to art class.
2. I did random blobs of different colours by dipping my brush into just a hint of water colour.
3. I let the paint dry.
4. I built on the blobs with whatever I decided to try to create what I liked.
5. Sometimes I doodled a border made with lines and marker or pen. On today’s postcard I drew some vines, joined them with a simple border. Just a simple bit of art.  
6. You don’t have water colour paints at home? You can create the ‘blobs’ by using repeat circular motions with crayons or markers. Go with pastel colours so the ink art stands out.
