Sunday, September 13, 2026 – Children of Ukraine
Are you concerned about children in Ukraine struggling through the war, or about Ukrainian children who have been orphaned? And what about the thousands of children abducted by Russia?
There are many reputable organizations doing tremendous work to help Ukrainian children. Start with DETY Project, a Canadian international awareness initiative focused on the impact of war on Ukrainian children. This autumn, we’re expanding our collaborative efforts with DETY Project, as described in our recent article, Where are you?
Some other reputable organizations focused on Ukrainian children include: Voices of Children, the Bring Kids Back campaign, and Save Ukraine.
Postcard Challenge – An expression of solidarity
I had one more water colour blob postcard but wanted to challenge myself to do something other than florals.
Ooooh-la-la, I found something on Instagram by @trishaiford! I thought the idea was cute, but it looked hard.
Never mind … I gave it a try and am happy to send my card to a Defender. 😊
You’ll notice that the IG creator painted faces using fleshy colours. Mine are the colourful blobs painted on a ‘blob day’ with the idea that I’d do something creative with the blobs later. Not flowers, as it happens.😉
What you need: water colour paint or markers; fine gel pens of any colour. An imagination.
- Start with water colour blobs painted in select areas on the postcard. Make sure they’re dry.
- Decide what character each face shape will become. Since I’m no artist, I took my lead from @trishaiford. She focused on using red as her dominant colour feature. I went with black, because that’s where my comfort zone lies. You’ll notice that I’m more of a copyist than an artist. 😉
- Consider giving your characters some word bubbles. These are always an efficient and effective way to employ some Ukrainian phrases. I typically choose You are heroes / Ви – герої! and Glory to Ukraine / Слава Україні!
This postcard art was the hardest one for me to do so far this month. And it took a lot of time, though I’m glad that I did it because I like the fact that it’s colourful and that it looks like a community of humans; ergo, an expression of solidarity.
As I was creating the ‘characters’ on my postcard, I started to think about what I might write. Since I had a handful of people, a ‘community’, I decided to write about the many people I encounter who stand with Ukraine. And I decided to write more in Ukrainian this time. It just felt right for me.
