Heritage Month Day 10

Thursday, September 10, 2026 – Books

Ask your local library: what are they doing to acknowledge Ukrainian Heritage Month? They hadn’t thought of it? Offer to run a postcard-writing workshop. See our “Run a Workshop” feature on our Practical Tools page. Ask them to display / offer / promote books about Ukraine, books written by Ukrainians.

Consider framing your postcard message to a Defender around a quote from a book or author that you especially like. Tell the Defender why the quote is important to you, or what you hope the Defender will get from the quote.

About quotes, here’s one that I like because it describes postcard warriors perfectly. Every postcard, every word, is a rainbow in a Defender’s hard day.

“Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” – Maya Angelou

Postcard Challenge – Sheep

As today’s postcard features Reykjavik, Iceland, where we are visiting, I had to share something about the astounding sheep-to-human ratio in Iceland. For the first time in modern written history, the human population in Iceland overshadows the sheep population. Partly, because of the influx of Polish and Ukrainian workers on the island.

I’ve never drawn a sheep, so I had to find a quick-and-easy tutorial. Because we post on social media, I tend to go to Instagram, where many creators post their tutorials. But you can find many more on YouTube!

I found a few tutorials that I liked quite quickly by using the search terms, “quick draw sheep”. The one that inspired my postcard was posted by @art.by.samjohnson.

  1. With a black pen, draw some [imperfect] rectangles on the postcard. Because odd numbers are ‘best’, I chose to do three sheep, using the upper right stamp rectangle ‘as is’. That is, I didn’t draw any lines because the stamp shape was already there.
  2. Add triangle shapes for the faces. Plus, the ears. I decided to locate faces in different places. One on the left side of the sheep, one on the right side of a sheep, and one in the centre, so it looks like it’s staring into the face of a Defender.
  3. Add the legs.
  4. The tutorial didn’t include tails, but I wanted to so did so.
  5. Choose one sheep to be the ram. Of course! Give it some curvy horns.😉
  6. Time to add a bit of colour. I chose three pastel colours – not green, because I want some green grass – and used water colour. You can use crayons or markers if that’s what you have.
  7. You can leave your sheep ‘as is’. Or do like I did: add some fun embellishments in black ink on the sheep. It’s up to you.

Not a complicated effort and it didn’t take much time.

Tomorrow … What gives you a smile?

Each day through Ukrainian Heritage Month, we’ll share some easy-to-do ideas that you can try on your postcards to Defenders. 30 days. 30 cards. Simple art.

Our Ultimate Heritage Challenge to you, dear postcard warrior: one postcard per day during September. Try some of the postcard ideas we offer. Prizes will be drawn for three winners who have tried at least three of the ideas that we’ve shared through the month of September. We’ll know because your cards will ‘show’ us. Deadline: we must receive your Ukrainian Heritage Month challenge package of postcards in our mailbox by October 20.
