Heritage Month Day 3

Thursday, September 3, 2026 – Ukrainian Culinary Traditions

Each day through Ukrainian Heritage Month, we’ll share some easy-to-do ideas that you can try on your postcards to Defenders. I’ve set a goal of creating 30 distinct postcards for Defenders on which I will try some art. Simple art. You’ll notice a tendency toward a blue/yellow theme. Because … you know … the Ukrainian flag!

But first … thinking ahead to the end of the week and to the weekend, when you might not want to do any cooking, we decided to introduce you to the Ukrainian Heritage Month campaign taking place in Ontario: Ukrainian Culinary Traditions (Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Ontario). They encourage you to try Ukrainian recipes, to visit Ukrainian restaurants and bakeries and other food sources.

Check out their interactive Culinary Heritage of Ukraine map where you can find a local Ukrainian restaurant or bakery. Visit one. Bon Appetite! Смачного!

We’ll visit a spot that we like to eat at later this month and tell you all about it! Hint: Café Lviv in Port Hope, Ontario. And heads up! We’ll be visiting food again during this Ukrainian Heritage month!

You don’t live in Ontario? Check out what’s available in your community. Share about your food experience!

Postcard challenge – Motivational Quote

Today we’re thinking about how culture is developed, shared and preserved. Food is one way. Others include literature, dance, the creative arts. Your challenge, dear postcard warrior, is to find a Ukrainian quote and apply it in some fashion to your message to a Defender. Or use a quote that you find particularly motivational, as Jessica (from California) does on some of her cards.

As I’m rather fond of the colourful folk motifs produced by Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko, I decided to frame my message to a Defender around her quote, “I will write peace on your wings.” I chose a postcard from a children’s postcard series purchased in Djupavogs, Iceland, featuring a pretty hand-drawn bird (by 6-year-old Isak).

I decided I needed a symbolic peace image, so found an easy-to-draw peace dove on Instagram by @easy_drawing_ideas.

What do you think? Did I nail it?

You might remember that we wrote about Connie’s symbolic Prairie Reflections dove and anemone postcards that she created in 2024 and shared with us to give to postcard warriors to write to Defenders. This was one of the ways in which Connie gave support to Ukraine. Here’s one of her cards arriving at the front lines.

Tomorrow … just a postcard.
