Sunday, September 6, 2026 – A small hand drawing
Each day through Ukrainian Heritage Month, we’ll share some easy-to-do ideas that you can try on your postcards to Defenders. I’ve set a personal goal of sending 30 distinct postcards to Defenders on which I will try some art. 30 days. 30 cards. Simple art.
And that’s our Ultimate Heritage Challenge: one postcard per day during September. During the thirty days, try some of the postcard ideas we offer. Prizes will be drawn for three winners who have tried at least three of the ideas that we’ve shared. We’ll know because your cards will ‘show’ us.
Deadline: we must receive your Ukrainian Heritage Month challenge package of postcards in our mailbox by October 20. If you think your Ultimate Challenge package will take longer than that to get to us, let us know. After all, mail can take up to a month from faraway places. We’ll hold off announcing the winners until all [known] packages arrive.
Day 6 Postcard Challenge – hand drawing
We encourage you to try a hand drawing today. Something that you like to draw, or try something new to you.
My challenge was to decide what to draw on an illustrated map postcard?
First, I thought about what I was going to write.
Once I decided that I’d write about an amazing whale encounter, the image came to me.
A whale, of course!
With soooooo many options to choose from once I started to look for tutorials on Instagram, I wanted to do something easy and unique.
I chose a cute option, “How to draw a whale” by @kellycreates who creates on Vancouver Island – one of my favourite places in the world! Check out her ideas! Loads of ’em.

Kelly used water colour paint for her whale, but I decided to simply use markers: blue and yellow. Because … you know … the Ukrainian flag! I also decided to add a heart border that I often use on my postcards to Defenders. But I wonder, … is it too much? Maybe just the whale would have been enough?
Perhaps you’ve already noticed? I decorate my card first. Then I know exactly how much room I have to write my message.
I feel better about today’s whale than about yesterday’s puffin. 😊
Tomorrow … a look at clouds.
