Wheat holds a special symbolic meaning in Ukraine representing fertility, prosperity, and unity all linked with Ukraine’s agricultural and cultural heritage.
Many of us learned in school that Ukraine is the “breadbasket of Europe”. This is true because of the expansive flat plains of Ukraine made up of rich black fertile soil.
You can find references to wheat in Ukrainian folk music, poetry, and in rituals such as at weddings and in formal greetings into homes and at public events with the bread-and-salt offering (khlib-sol).
You may have also enjoyed the delicious egg-rich Paska – Easter bread – that represents renewal and resurrection.
And perhaps by now you are familiar with the blue sky / wheat fields symbolism of Ukraine’s national flag.
During Ukrainian Heritage Month, visit a Ukrainian baker and try some of their delicious baked breads and desserts. You won’t regret it!

Postcard Challenge – Wheat
Today’s postcard art is wheat; an important symbol of fertility, prosperity and unity in Ukraine.
I found How to Draw Easy Wheat on YouTube channel @MommyDoodles.
What you need: a postcard [of course], pencil, fine black gel pen, [wheat] yellow and light green markers.
The tutorial is less than a minute and gave me everything I needed to know to draw a simple wheat sheaf. Here’s my effort (x2):
