Our Ultimate Heritage Challenge to you, dear postcard warriors: one postcard per day during September. Try some of the postcard art ideas we offer through this month. Prizes will be drawn for three winners who have tried at least three different ideas that we’ve shared through the month of September. We’ll know because your cards will ‘show’ us.

Postcard Challenge – Chickens
You may recall in the early days after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the image of a ceramic rooster, high in an apartment building, standing on a kitchen cabinet that leaned against the wall. Everything else from that flat was gone after a russian attack on the town of Borodianka.
The rooster became a symbol of resilience.
What most of us don’t know is that the resilient rooster is a decorative piece of maiolica pottery which creative process dates back to the 18th century, where it was produced in the town of Vasylkiv, a center of pottery production in Ukraine. The tradition of creating maiolica pottery traveled from Italy to Ukraine, eventually becoming a symbol of Ukrainian folk art.
The resilient rooster and its kitchen cabinet have since been installed in the Maidan Museum in Kyiv, Ukraine.
I wondered whether there any producers of rooster postcards in Ukraine, and found some roosters at Postal Ukraine, which also sells some of my favourite postcards by Olga Haidamaka.
At UkrPoshta postal market, you can find many postcards, including this lovely rooster embroidery card.
So, today I decided to try to draw some chickens because I like chickens, and because my son raised them for more than a decade (a small business). If you draw a rooster, please share!
Again, I wanted something quick, easy and colourful, which I found on the Instagram account of @art.by.samjohnson
All you need are: postcard, pencil, a black gel pen, and some colourful crayons, markers or water colour. I went with markers for this one.
