Each day through Ukrainian Heritage Month, we share an easy-to-do art idea that you can try on your postcards to Defenders. 30 days. 30 cards. Simple art.
Our Ultimate Heritage Challenge to you, dear postcard warriors: one postcard per day during September. Try some of the postcard ideas we offer through the month. Or, do your own unique thing! Prizes will be drawn for three winners who have tried at least three different ideas that we’ve shared through the month of September. We’ll know because your cards will ‘show’ us. Deadline: we must receive your Ukrainian Heritage Month challenge postcards in our mailbox by October 20.
Postcard Challenge – Friends
We offer another idea for kids to try, but you can try it too! I liked doing today’s challenge as it’s simple and it beautifully emphasizes the ideals of friendship between postcard warriors and Defenders.
A happy coincidence made a friendship postcard art idea even more relevant. On September 10th, 2026, Prime Minister Carney (Canada) and President Zelenskyy (Ukraine) met in Canada to “reaffirm and elevate the relationship between their two countries and peoples,” through a Canada-Ukraine Declaration for a 100-year Partnership.
The statement issued by the Government of Canada reminds us that in December 1991, Canada was the first Western country to recognize the independence of Ukraine. Further, “the friendship between Canada and Ukraine is strengthened by the more than 1.3 million Canadians of Ukrainian heritage whose contributions to Canada, and devotion to Ukraine, form a living bridge between the two nations.”
Wow! A formal declaration of partnership looking to the future, 100 years hence. How’s that for a long-term commitment to friendship?!?
We found an easy and relevant friendship idea in the creative Instagram space of @condsty.
What you need: a postcard; I chose polar bears from our travels in Norway; a fine black ink pen / gel pen; a vibrant colour marker to write the word “FRIENDS”; grey or silver marker to create lines; a pencil and a ruler if you want to organize your space (like I do). As is my wont, I chose a blue/yellow theme. Of course! 😉 I used yellow marker to hold the friendship in a cloud space on the postcard.
You will write the word FRIENDS, in all caps, then pull each letter down to write letter-related statements about friendship. Like so:
