We’re at the midpoint of Ukrainian Heritage Month and I hope you’ve had a chance to try some of new/different art ideas on your postcards to Defenders. Let us know how it’s going. We can’t wait for your postcards to start filling up our mailbox!

Each day through Ukrainian Heritage Month, we’ll share an easy-to-do idea that you can try on your postcards to Defenders. 30 days. 30 cards. Simple art.

Our Ultimate Heritage Challenge to you, dear postcard warriors: one postcard per day during September. Prizes will be drawn for three winners who have tried at least three different ideas that we’ve shared through the month of September. We’ll know because your cards will ‘show’ us. Deadline: we must receive your Ukrainian Heritage Month challenge package of postcards in our mailbox by October 20.

Postcard Challenge – Flamingos

We get our inspiration to draw flamingos from the russian embassy protesters in Ottawa who have protested daily in front of the russian embassy since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. We were honoured to join them this summer and are proud to have been welcomed into the NAFO Beaver Brigade.

Sometimes, rep’ers draw flamingos on their postcards. A way to acknowledge the long-range FP-5 “Flamingo” that Ukraine uses to demilitarize russian military infrastructure. The rep’ers have even designed a flamingo postcard, AND – we are told – they have some new ones to write to Defenders. Can’t wait to see ‘em!

And then there were Flamingo Friday’s! Chalk drawings, costumes, rubber flamingos … the works!

So, today, we give a nod to the sustained daily grind of the rep’ers and friends who pound the pavement in front of the russian embassy in Ottawa, even taking some abuse from embassy employees, including by the balloon-popping guy!

What you need: gel pens: black, coral, pink. I didn’t have coral so used two shades of pink.  And a postcard. Of course. 😉

I found some easy-to-do flamingos on Instagram by @artmadeeasystudio. But you can find other ones there and on YouTube.

Step 1: draw flamingo bodies, moving upward to create the ‘round’ of the head from which you will add the beak.

Step 2: draw the beak.

Step 3: colour in the beak; ideally, with peach if you have it. I used pink.

Step 4: draw some funky stripes or blobs or whatever to individualize your flamingos.

Step 5: add ‘mouth’ where it makes sense and eyes; some open; some closed.

Step 6: date your piece of original art.

It was easy and fun to draw these flamingos, and it didn’t take much time. I love them so much that I’ve created digital stickers out of them!
