Round one, the answer

The hidden thread through August’s sky was Postcrossing.

Twenty of our postcard warriors and Ukrainian friends shone together as one figure with no name, and what joined them was this: every one of them came to the project through Postcrossing, the postcard-exchange community — and many of them found each other there too. They are lit in gold now, and the figure has its name back. Look for The Postcrossers in the Constellations module.

Guesses closed on 20 August.

No winner this round

Nobody found the correct answer this time. We had guesses, but none landed on Postcrossing. So round one closes without a winner.

This is allowed to happen. A mystery that nobody can miss is not much of a mystery, and we would rather set one that makes you look properly at who is up there than one that gives itself away. Thank you to everyone who sent a guess in — you read the sky exactly as we hoped you would.

How the game works

Every two months, one figure raises up in the night sky without name.

In the Constellations module, a group of our writers shines together as a single figure — but nothing tells you what they share. One hidden thread connects every star in it. Working it out is the game.

The clues are all in their published interviews. Wander the sky, click any star, and read that person’s story. The answer is somewhere in there.

To enter

1. Open the exhibition and switch to the Constellations module.
2. Look at who is up there, and decide what they all have in common.
3. Press Send your guess on the mystery card and type your answer — or simply email it to deldal@gmail.com.

Everyone with the right answer goes into a draw to win an envelope full of postcards from Linda’s collection — perfect for writing your own messages to Ukraine’s Defenders, or for your personal projects.

What happens after the 20th

Guesses close on the 20th, every second month, in step with the newsletter.

In the weeks that follow, while the team is at work on the next issue, we post the answer on the website, draw a winner from among the correct entries, and notify them by email.

The winner is announced publicly too — in the newly published issue and here on the website — under whatever name they would like to be known by. Their own name, a nickname, or simply “anonymous”, if they would rather not be named. The choice is entirely theirs, and we always ask before anything is published.

Then, with the release of the newest newsletter, a fresh constellation goes up in the sky, and the guessing begins again.

Round two

The next figure goes up when the July-August newsletter is published, and guesses will close on 20 October 2026.

Until then the sky belongs to The Postcrossers, named at last.
