Did you know … ?

May 21st is the 20th anniversary of Vyshyvanka Day? A day to celebrate the beautiful uniquely embroidered Ukrainian shirts.

Have one? Wear it as a symbol of support for Ukraine.

Don’t have one? Find out from a Ukrainian friend or neighbour, or from a local organization, where there might be a market or producer of Vyshyvanka where you can purchase one.

You can also find them online. BE SURE to support a Ukrainian creator / business! For instance, last year Tamara at home base sent me a beautiful handmade Vyshyvanka from Ya Kozachka, which I wear at postcard-writing events and, of course, on Vyshyvanka Day.

Other Ukrainians makers of Vyshyvanky:  Merezhka, ETHOXATA, and Katrya. You may have to tap into the “translate” feature to read the website in English.

Regional embroidery patterns, Ukraine (artofit.org).

There are traditional regional embroidery patterns. Vyshyvanka makers use traditional embroidery and shirt patterns, as well as sometimes modify creatively. For instance, you can find some stunning dresses that feature traditional embroidery patterns. Even wedding dresses!

We’d love to feature images of our followers in our newsletter and on our website. Take one of you attending a Vyshyvanka event. Take one of you writing postcards to Defenders while wearing your Vyshyvanka. Or, take one while enjoying a coffee with a friend. Whatever your doing. Take a photo and send it along to us.

Let’s celebrate beautiful Ukrainian culture as featured in traditional embroidery!
