… I give with my heart
~ Faye, Massachusetts (Guest article)
My name is Faye and I live just outside Boston, Massachusetts in the USA. For many years I was a teacher, working mostly with young preschool-aged children. Now, I’m retired, though I have a small part-time job helping a senior citizen do her shopping every week. She is 92 years old and I find her amazing!
I have been an animal lover my entire life and have adopted many animals, both cats and dogs. I currently have four dogs and three cats, all rescue animals who needed homes. Needless to say, they keep me busy and active.
I also like to crochet blankets for various charitable organizations as well as family and friends. I go lap swimming a few times a week to keep in shape, and I love to tend my garden. After a harsh winter, I am overjoyed when spring arrives! My ever-faithful perennials pop up and are a most welcome sight.
Having a home is everything to me. When the war in Ukraine started, my heart went out to the Ukrainian people who live in constant danger of losing their homes and having their communities destroyed. Living under such circumstances is unimaginable to me. I live far away from Ukraine, but Postcards to the Front in Canada was a way I could show my support in a tangible way.
I learned about Postcards to the Front through my participation in Postcrossing. I learned how postcards can make a difference and each postcard lets the Defenders of Ukraine know that they are supported. I feel such joy when I receive postcards through Postcrossing, and it means a lot to me to be able to similarly brighten the day of those who defend Ukraine.
There is a quote that really speaks to me: “What I make with my hands, I give with my heart.” When I work on postcards for the Defenders of Ukraine, I usually decorate the back of the postcards with flowers that are primarily blue and yellow. I love to try to make something beautiful on each postcard I send. Investing this time and effort is giving of myself and a way of expressing my heartfelt wishes.
It is such a difficult world we live in. Times are very challenging in my country right now. The wars that are happening in the world break my heart when I see how ordinary people like myself who are affected, losing so much in their world.
I hope my postcards for the Defenders of Ukraine can make a difference.

Faye’s colourful cards. It’s easy to spot Faye’s cards when they arrive in Ukraine.

Please continue to tell others about this project. Ask family and friends to write cards. Involve your children and grandchildren. Defenders especially appreciate postcards with drawings and notes from children.
