A Fundraiser for Ukraine in Howick, Quebec

Amy, a member of the Howick Women’s Institute in Quebec, contacted us about a fundraising event for Ukraine that she was helping to organize, “Cars, Quilts and Community”. Of course, we could send her some postcards!
Amy is quite aware of Ukraine’s struggles as her family has sponsored Ukrainians sheltering in Canada.
It rained on the day of the event, but “the rainy weather encouraged everyone to be inside to view the quilts and to write postcards to Ukraine’s Defenders.”
The days’ events featured “A Stitch in Time”, a quilt project initiated by a local prison chaplain, Rev. David Shantz and his wife, Susannah, both of whom grew up surrounded by quilting bees and sewing circles.
“It isn’t often that we find men that are interested in this craft, but it seems the inmates embraced it,” Amy told us.
The chaplain has since retired, but he and his wife continue to work with the inmates, as volunteers.
Amy explained that “the beauty in the inmate work was especially evident in a gold and white quilt which the men made for the 50th wedding anniversary of the chaplain and his wife; it included a personal message from each inmate.”
One woman who attended the event was a mechanic in the Canadian Armed Forces. She had received postcards while she was deployed in Europe, and shared “how meaningful they are to the soldiers.”
Thank you, Amy, for reaching out, and to the community of Howick for all that you do for Ukraine; including, writing postcards to Defenders of Ukraine! Your batch of postcards is on the way to offer some sunshine and hope at the front lines.
