Postcards to the Front (Canada / Канада)

Canadians sending postcards with messages of support and encouragement to Ukraine’s frontline Defenders.

Behind the scenes at home base

There’s always something happening at home base in Millbrook, Ontario. All ordinary. But … we do have fun! Packing and sending blank cards to postcard warriors who need some to write. Picking up written cards that land in our mailbox, then organizing them for shipment to Ukraine. Facilitating workshops and sharing about the project at various venues such as school meetings or on Zoom meetings to community groups and others. Finding ways to tell others in the community about Ukraine, about Postcards to the Front. Joining in on various events that serve to keep Ukraine on the minds of Canadians. Always something to keep us engaged in our commitment to support Ukraine.

May 15th is Vyshyvanka Day in Ukraine. Simply, it’s a day that Ukrainians celebrate their roots through the traditions and love handed down over the centuries via traditional regional embroidered shirts and dresses. Vyshyvanka are typically worn on special occasions, such as weddings and festive celebrations such as Christmas.

Here’s how we celebrated at home base in Millbrook and in Oshawa, where we occasionally join the weekly support Ukraine rallies held every Sunday since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine at the Albert Street bridge overpass over Hwy 401, Canada’s busiest highway. It’s incredibly heartwarming to hear so many car and truck horns honking in support of Ukraine as the vehicles travel through.

Helen is grateful for the Vyshyvanka gifted from Tamara at home base in Ukraine. Made by the talented Yakozachka @ua.kozachka Love it! Jean-Michel wears his, gifted to him by family in Ukraine on our wedding, with great pride in his heritage.

Consider a group effort this summer, so that we can send a lot of messages of love and support in time for Christmas. Yes! We start to plan Christmas in summer so cards arrive on time at the front lines to give extra-needed support over the lonely holidays.

Remember – Your cards do make a difference as Danylo tells us from the front lines –

Nothing warms the soldiers’ heart as a handwritten letter.

And, as Nadia in Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine reminds us –

Postcard support gives strength and courage.

Thank you for your continued support of Defenders of Ukraine!
