Three years ago, within days following the invasion of Ukraine, three young women living at the front lines in eastern Ukraine launched Postcards to the Front. Australia branch was formed in March 2023, and Canada branch followed in April 2023.
We all thought that the war would be over by the end of 2023. But, we agreed that it was still worthwhile to send postcard messages to Defenders at the front lines so they knew that they had support and love and care from around the world. We especially focused on Christmas 2023 to ensure that Defenders, who might then be home for the holidays, knew that the world had not forgotten them.
But. Here we are.
More than three years since the full-scale invasion, and the invader refuses to engage in legitimate talks about ceasefire, let alone withdrawal from Ukraine’s lands.
Ukrainians face a daily barrage of hundreds of missiles. Everyone has lost someone. Everyone knows someone who lost everything. Everyone is tired. But, Ukrainians remain resilient and strong and stay the course of what is just. Defending their home and their culture. Like any of us would.
Postcards to the Front remains staunch in its support of Ukraine. So many people all over the world continue to write heartfelt messages of hope, love, kindness and support. We read hundreds of postcards each week, and all these sentiments remain strong and true in the messages that postcard warriors write. Thank you! You are doing tremendously powerful work of human care and connection.
How many postcards since Australia and Canada joined in with this project to make it a global love affair?
More than 25,000 have been gathered from around the world and have landed in the hands of Ukraine’s front line Defenders.
Your postcard messages are tucked under sun visors in vehicles and tucked into pockets. Along with children’s drawings, they form galleries of love and beauty on walls, some of which are dirt walls in trenches, on large bureaus, on doors. Wherever a splash of colour and beauty, and love and hope are needed. Reminders that the world has not forgotten.
As postcard warrior extraordinaire Garth, from Australia, recently told us, “No missiles can stop us writing.” He reminds that our postcard messages serve the purpose of “Love … universal and not conveyed by words alone. … It is this love that will defeat savagery and fascism.”
We don’t get many written messages from the front lines, but we do get some photos, which we share in our monthly newsletter, which you can find here. Defenders holding your love and support in their hands. Galleries of love and hope. Postcard messages with supplies.
