A batch of postcards arrived at the front lines recently with some food, as well as much-coveted Hindenberg candles, now more commonly called trench candles. These candles are made by volunteers in Ukraine who collect tins or cans, some cardboard, and paraffin (wax). Small pieces of cardboard are twisted in a particular way, then melted paraffin is poured into the shallow tin. This simple technology, that debuted during WWI, was first designed to provide light. Now, Ukraine’s Defenders depend on these trench candles to provide light, to serve as mini-heaters to provide vital warmth, and sometimes to aid with the warming of food.

Along with supplies, your postcard messages boost morale. They perform a vital role in supporting the mental health of Defenders. It matters to them, and to their families, that the world hasn’t forgotten them, that we support them, and that we care. Thank you!
